K1 - Cascades’ Science Pub on Mar. 21 will explore Central Oregon’s climate and lands, and their effect on plants in “Gardening in the High Desert is “Snow” Joke,” a presentation by Amy Jo Detweiler, a professor and horticulturist with the K1 Extension Service.
The Science Pub will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Worthy Brewing’s Eastside Brewery & Pub, 495 NE Bellevue Drive in Bend. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Detweiler will discuss the influence of Central Oregon’s climate and lands on growing vegetables and plants. She will provide research-based advice on watering, soils, and plant selection and plant protection for successful gardening.
Detweiler has worked as a professor and horticulturist serving Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson counties for nearly 25 years and is responsible for teaching and outreach about community and commercial horticulture in the high desert environment. She leads the Central Oregon Master Gardener program, which provides participants research-based gardening information. Detweiler specializes in sustainable landscape practices including water-wise gardening, backyard food production, and landscaping that supports the community Firewise USA program.
