K1ΜεΣύ β Cascadesβ Science Pub series continues on Nov. 14 with βThe Secret Lives of Sharks,β a talk that explores research underway in the Chapple Big Fish Lab at K1ΜεΣύβs Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport.
Presenter Alexandra McInturf is a postdoctoral fellow in the Big Fish Lab and will share how she and her fellow researchers track and study sharks, including on the Oregon Coast, and some of the adventures they have experienced along the way. Researchers from the Big Fish Lab have been featured on the Discovery Channelβs Shark Week and National Geographicβs Shark Fest programs.
The lab focuses on understanding the critical roles sharks play in maintaining vibrant marine ecosystems in Oregon and around the world. As part of this mission, researchers are initiating new scientific paradigms including developing technologies to study how sharks behave as mothers. Their hope is to shift the narrative about sharks as mindless killers, and protect shark moms and shark babies from the assaults they face including climate change, urbanization of coastal areas and illegal harvesting.
The Science Pub will take place from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. in the Charles McGrath Family Atrium in Edward J. Ray Hall at K1ΜεΣύ-Cascades. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for networking and dining with the presentation to follow at 6 p.m.
Registration is required and on-campus parking is free. The event is $22 per person, which includes a light, pub-style, pre-lecture dinner by K1ΜεΣύ-Cascadesβ Edge Catering. The no-host bar will offer beer, wine, cider and soft drinks.
